Description

The bodega Jorge Ordoñez was founded in 2004 by the Ordoñez family from Malaga and the Kracher family from Austria, together with a group of friends and entrepreneurs from Malaga. Perhaps the most novel aspect of this winemaking venture was to enlist the services of world-renowned Austrian winemaker, Alois Kracher, who was the undisputed number one in Austrian sweet wines. He was succeeded by his son Gerhard Kracher in 2008. At the helm of this most original project are Jorge Ordoñez, one of the most prominent Spanish wine importers in the US, and his sister Victoria Ordoñez, who is the general manager of the winery. With the harvest of 2004 came the birth of the first bottles from our winery, nestled in the heart of the Axarquía region of Málaga. This mountainous region of steep slopes and slate soil near the Mediterranean is believed to be one of the oldest viticultural areas in Europe. Due to the steady increase in production, in 2008 the winery began to move its installations to their present location in Vélez-Málaga. The winery in Axarquía is situated on partially decomposed slate intermingled with limestone clay. The result is a poor soil where bedrock frequently comes to the surface, making the tasks involved in vine cultivation, which are already difficult due to the rugged terrain, even more arduous. The slopes range from 40-60% and greater, with an absolute height difference of 400 m. This is the most significant topographic feature and one of the strongest conditioning factors in agriculture. Mechanization of the cultivation would be extremely difficult and is currently nonexistent.
