Bin 28 was named after the Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, and from 2019 onwards, the wine is not labelled 'Kalimna'.
Producer Tasting Notes: (2022 vintage)
"COLOUR Purple with a black core. NOSE The aromas present an array of scents pointing to varietal origin. The nose is distinguished by subtle formic character, followed by savoury blood pudding notes, aniseed/fennel & black liquorice. Milk chocolate hints add a soft, sweet touch to the dark fruit, where red, blue, & black fruits are all present. Ground cinnamon, toasted fennel seeds, clove, mace & sumac contribute to an overall liveliness. PALATE The texture is suggestive of cocoa powder while being framed by sufficient savoury oak to add structure without dominating. Leading with black fruit notes, it progresses with dark plum & hints of gamey richness (roast venison). Baking spice notes & a delicate icing sugar dusting add nuance without tipping into overt sweetness. Lively acidity runs from start to finish, perfectly accompanied by fine tannins contributing to an enduring balance. Despite its depth & layers, it has typical Bin 28 ease: its complexity is apparent yet approachable." - Penfolds
