Description
Pitray has been owned by the same family for the last six hundred years. The XVth century feudal manor built by the Prieurs, was rebuilt in the XVIIth century by their descendants, a branch of the powerful Ségur family, whose only daughter married her neighbour Elie de Simard, a former mayor of Saint Emilion, in 1715. In 1868, General Louis de Simard de Pitray had the present castle built by an architect from Bordeaux named Blaquières. This impressive building in « Victorian Gothic » style, is surrounded by a park featuring century-old oak and cedar trees. The present heirs, Count and Countess de Boigne, endeavour to combine family traditions and progressive solutions in order to maintain their ancestors’ heritage and pass it on to the next generation. Jean de Boigne, their son has been in charge of selling Pitray wines since 2003, as its quality is ever more acknowledged throughout the world
James Suckling: 92 Points
Aromas of glossy, spicy oak and plush, ripe dark plums with hazelnut and tarry nuances, too. The flavorful palate delivers in assertive and bold style with a juicy and intense surge of fruit, holding long into the finish.
Wine Enthusiast: 91 Points
A concentrated wine from the Pitray family, who fought in the American Revolution, this has bold tannins and the potential for rich fruit. A powerful wine, it shows plenty of spice as well as ripe black-currant flavors and acidity.
